Lyrebird College
350sqm education facility for students with specialised learning requirements
Overview
Fleetwood was contracted to deliver the first stage of a program of works for Lyrebird College (a specialist school for students with an autism spectrum disorder). Located in the Yarra Ranges (Victoria), the new school is in an ideal locale to serve families in the eastern corridor of Melbourne as well as becoming part of the re-energised Coldstream education precinct consisting of the Coldstream Primary School, Yarra Ranges Kindergarten, Maternal Health Centre and playgroup. Designed and constructed by Fleetwood the project was procured directly through the college board, a group of volunteers formed back in 2016 whose sole purpose was to bring this dream to fruition.
Solution
The two buildings delivered as part of the first phase of the program of works consisted of 10 modules (350 square metres). The buildings were designed to incorporate classrooms and quiet rooms for specific student learning requirements along with student and staff amenities, an ambulant toilet, first aid room, staff room, office, reception and principal’s office to create a brand-new school hub. A full turnkey solution covering all aspects of the delivery of the project was provided. Fleetwood was responsible for the initial site set-up; removal of trees and reticulation of a major storm water drainage plan all prior to the building being delivered. In addition to the delivery and installation of the new modular buildings, Fleetwood prepared the remainder of the site for phase two of the program of works to be completed at a later stage.
Benefits
The buildings were designed specifically to help foster a learning environment conducive for children with special learning needs. The new buildings have allowed parents within the Yarra Ranges region with an opportunity to provide their children with an individualised curriculum that recognises every child’s right to be supported in an environment that enables them to meet their full potential. Lyrebird College will now be able to successfully adopt a cohort model to ensure the greatest possible educational outcomes for their students from foundation to year 10 are met.
