Gudai-Darri Accommodation Village Expansion
Overview
Fleetwood Australia was contracted to design, manufacture and supply modular buildings for a 1,500 person accommodation camp, followed by a 2,100 person accommodation village and central facilities, designed to meet high specification Rio Tinto requirements. These requirements included upgrading the standard mining single person unit from steel to concrete floors, increased room size, security, and an upgraded internal fit-out.
The buildings provide housing for workers at the nearby Gudai-Darri mine, located 110km northwest of Newman.
Solution
Fleetwood manufactured and supplied 159 modules over the course of 6-8 months, expertly prefabricated in their WA factory. Over 9,000m2 of modern workers accommodation facilities were quickly delivered for the camp. Overall, the project saw a wide range of purpose-designed accommodation units built, including:
- 152 x 3 Person Units
- 480 rooms
- 2 x 2 Person (couples) Units
- 2 x Universal Access Units
The units are fitted out with security
swipe card access that integrates with the client’s existing systems. The walls also feature an upgraded acoustic rating to create an additional sound barrier to increase guest privacy and prevent noise complaints. The larger rooms allow for additional comforts not commonly provided in standard mining single person quarters, such as:
- Queen size beds, rather than king single
- Large rain showerheads, with clear glass hinged shower doors
- Vinyl plank flooring
- Faux-brick ensuite wall feature
- Doubled room fixtures such as
- Cupboards, bedside tables and shaving cabinets.
Benefits
The project completion date was easily met by Fleetwood’s dedicated team, who rapidly manufactured all village buildings in less than eight months. The high-quality buildings that meet all the required client specifications are designed for long term use, with the mine having an expected lifespan of 30 years. All cupboards and cabinets feature security locks to increase convenience and peace of mind for all guests. The secure storage combined with the large room configuration, allows them to be easily shared between multiple workers on opposite schedules, creating long term cost savings for the client mine operator.
